Romantic Proposal in Tokyo, Shinjuku Gyoen under the rain
As a photographer, there’s nothing more rewarding than helping to capture one of life’s most cherished moments—a marriage proposal. Last August, I had the privilege of photographing a beautiful proposal in the heart of Tokyo, at Shinjuku Gyoen. What started as a challenge due to the weather turned into one of the most memorable photoshoots I’ve ever been a part of.
Planning the Perfect Proposal
It all began when [name of the future fiancé] reached out to me, looking for the perfect spot to propose. We initially planned on making the grand moment happen with Mount Fuji as the backdrop—a dream-like setting, but nature had other plans. The forecast predicted poor visibility, and just two or three days before the proposal, I advised him to change the location.
Shinjuku Gyoen, one of Tokyo’s most picturesque parks, became the alternative. With its serene bridges, blooming gardens, and peaceful atmosphere, I knew it would still offer a magical experience. I also helped organize a bouquet of her favorite flowers to make the moment even more special.
A Photoshoot Disguised as a Surprise
On the day of the proposal, I picked them up at their hotel and we drove together to the park. The future fiancé had told her that he had arranged a casual photoshoot for them, keeping the real surprise hidden until the perfect moment.
We started near one of the iconic bridges in the park, a beautiful and romantic spot. As we took some initial shots, I gave him the signal, and he dropped to one knee. She was completely surprised—her smile lit up her face, and she couldn’t stop looking at her engagement ring. The moment was perfect, filled with joy and emotion.
A Cloudy Day Turns into a Magical Memory
After the proposal, we continued capturing more shots of the newly engaged couple around the park, making the most of its lush surroundings. The next stop was the Taiwanese Pavilion, a peaceful corner of the park that provided just the right atmosphere. The overcast sky gave us perfect soft lighting, and to our luck, the cloudy weather meant that we had most of the park to ourselves.
But just as we wrapped up, something unexpected happened—a downpour. We were sitting at a café taking a coffee break when suddenly the sky opened up and rain poured down. It wasn’t part of the plan, but what followed turned out to be one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever captured.
Dancing in the Rain
Instead of letting the rain dampen the day, I asked the couple if they minded getting a bit wet. They didn’t. With towels from a nearby convenience store at the ready, we stepped out into the rain and embraced the weather. The results? Some of the most stunning, raw, and emotional photos I’ve ever taken.
The rain became part of the story, with droplets cascading around them, and the pure joy and love they shared shining through. The photos perfectly captured their complicity and the sense of adventure they shared. Sometimes, it’s the unforeseen moments that create the most memorable photos.
A Happy Ending
With soaked clothes and happy hearts, I drove the couple back to their hotel. They were thrilled with the day—what started as a potential problem turned into a unique experience that they’ll remember for a lifetime. The rain became part of their love story, and I was grateful to have been a part of it.
