A Sunrise Proposal at Heiwa no Torii, Hakone
When Hugo reached out about proposing to Jazibe in Japan, I knew we had to create something unforgettable. Their story, which began in childhood and blossomed into a deep love, deserved a setting just as enchanting. With their family joining them on this journey to Japan, Hugo wanted to make this moment memorable for Jazibe and everyone who had watched their love grow through the years.
Planning the Perfect Morning
Having photographed countless proposals at Hakone, I suggested Hugo the serene Heiwa no Torii for its breathtaking beauty at sunrise. There's something particularly special about this spot in the early morning light when the mist still clings to Lake Ashi, and the gate stands proudly against the awakening sky.
When I arrived at their hotel at 7 AM, posing as a simple tour guide - a little secret that would help keep our true mission. The family, all in on the secret, played along perfectly as we made our way to the gate, and Jazibe remained completely unaware of what was about to happen.
The Perfect Moment
As we began taking family photos, I carefully orchestrated the moment while maintaining my tour guide persona. When I suggested they take in the view of the lake, Hugo knew it was time. As Jazibe gazed at the peaceful waters, he dropped to one knee behind her. The look on her face when she turned around - pure joy and surprise - is something I'll never forget.
The quiet morning air soon filled with the sound of happy tears and celebration of the newly engaged couple and their families.
Beyond The Perfect Shots
Some say timing is everything in photography, but for me, it's the genuine emotions that make an image truly timeless. Jazibe and Hugo's story reminded me why I love what I do. Their childhood love, carried across anew under a Japanese torii gate, is the kind of story that makes my heart sing as a photographer.
