How to propose in Japan - 5 Tips to make the best out of this special event
Proposals can be a stressful experience. If you are looking into asking THE BIG question during your trip to Japan, here are 5 tips that will help you make sure that your proposal will be a success and go as smooth as possible.
1 - Choose the perfect location to propose in Japan
Japan is full of iconic locations that would be perfect for your proposal. But first ask yourself those simple questions first - Is your future fiancée ok with being asked that question in public? If not, maybe the intimacy of a nice hotel could be the best option. If yes, then does she prefer the busy streets or gardens, scenic views and mountains? Personally, I always advise my clients to pick a place that is somehow not too crowded, so that they have enough time to enjoy the moment with too many people walking around them. Areas such as Kawaguchiko near Mt. Fuji can be a great choice for a scenic and memorable place to propose.
Other locations such as temples, Tokyo Tower or Hakone can also be great ones, but keep in mind that you might want to visit them early if you want to beat the crowds, especially in Autumn and Spring.
2 - Practice what you will say when you propose
In the heat of the moment, it can be easy to forget what to say, on which finger to put the ring etc… so don’t hesitate to practice what you are going to say so that everything goes smoothly. But don’t put too much pressure on yourself, emotions happen on both sides and among the couples that I captured during their proposals, a lot of them are overwhelmed with emotions and kind of forgot the full speech. That’s totally fine.
3 - Book a nice restaurant for the night, so that you have a reason to dress up
Put yourself in the shoes of your future fiancée. She wants to look good for the pictures as well. What you can do is to book a good restaurant, or tell her that you booked a photoshoot for the day, so that she can get ready and prepare her make up.
Pro Tips as well - If she can get her nails done before the trip, that will make for great results and she will be happy about it! So you can ask one of her friend to mention it! They will look great when you will take ring pictures and she will be happy that they do!
4 - Hire a photographer (and videographer if you want) to capture your proposal
Moments like this only happen once. And it would be a shame not to have memories of the moment captured for you. How about you hire a photographer to help you with that. I actually specialize in Proposal Photography and would be more than happy to help you plan and capture great pictures of your proposal, but also pictures of you after that. That will make for great pictures for you to look back on but to also share with your family and friends!
5 - Don’t overthink your proposal
I was in your shoes not too long ago. I know we can tend to overthink those things. You want it to be perfect, at the perfect time, with the perfect view. But don’t worry too much about it. At the end of the day, it is a special moment for you and your future fiancée to enjoy together. So just do so, enjoy it and enjoy your time in Japan. That is what matters. That you have a great time doing so and that you remember that time for the years to come.
